Location

Aotea, Great Barrier Island is situated on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand’s only National Marine Park, a mere 90 kilometres from Auckland City, just a 30 minute scenic flight – but a world away from the big city energy. Over 70% of the land is protected Conservation Park, the landscapes are out of this world, the beaches are truely stunning, and the night skies are next level, with the whole island declared a Dark Sky Sanctuary. Both the land and the people of Aotea could be best described as authentic, natural, and welcoming. This really is a very special place to visit.

Highlights

nature fix

Walking through the regenerating Kauri forest on Aotea with views of the unique rocky outcrops, it is easy to imagine you have been teleported way back in time to the Jurassic period. The vegetation combined with this unique geology is very special and thanks to the low number of predators the birdlife is amazing.

accommodation

Great Barrier Lodge was established in 1922 located on the edge of the beautiful Whangaparapara Harbour, centrally located on the Island offering easy access to the airport, the natural Hot Springs, a multitude of walking trails, as well as awesome kayaking. The 3.5 star lodge exudes charm and history, and most rooms have views out over the harbour.

natural hot springs

Secluded in bush, what just looks like any other stream is actually an amazing healing opportunity. Hot mineral rich water flowing through a succession of totally natural pools for you to soak in. Find your perfect temperature, help yourself to a face mask of natural clay, lie back, relax and soak away your problems and pains as Mother Nature does the healing.

FOOD

We are so excited that Anna from the The Veggie Tree will also cater for our Great Barrier Escape Retreat! Many of you will remember her food from our Bay of Island Boat Cruise Retreats and Stewart Island Natural Wonders Retreat. We had rave reviews! Everyone loves her and brought her cookbooks. No meal was ever the same, but always delicious!

Mermaid Rock Pools

Aotea has created some of New Zealand’s most beautiful white sand beaches, framed with impressive headlands and famous rock pools, the crystal clear waters are very invigorating and cleansing. Lying on the warm sand after a swim in the calm rock pools or exciting surf is one of the natural pleasures of life. You can’t help but feel expansive as you stare out across the waves to the open ocean.

boat cruise

One of the best ways to view the Motu of Aotea would have to be by boat. Learn about local history and take in the fantastic views of the Barrier’s rugged coastline. Regular sightings of dolphins is a bonus on this magical trip. Cruise up to and around Broken Islands and the gannet colony before anchoring in a sheltered bay for a dip.
